Why do I have to wear a leash?

Woof! Buster here, ready to soak up some canine wisdom. My human handed me this leash thing, but I'm not quite sure why. What's the deal with leashes, and what about those harnesses? Also, there's this retractable thingy – is it as cool as it looks?
